Episode #7: The Arrival

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #7: The Arrival

When you are traveling rough, you tend to idealize the comforts of home.

Suddenly there were only 300 miles left until we would reach land and it hit us that our trip and time on the ocean was drawing to an end. We had left the garbage patch, the water turned greener and more fruitful, our clothes and sleeping bags were all wet and we were really looking forward to get back onto our natural habitat: solid ground… Continue reading

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #6: Pez/pescado, luminescence and (almost) shitting my pants, oh, and dolphins

Will I tell my greatgrandchildren about all of this? Claro que si! How could I ever forget. Even if I take equally or even more mindblowing trips in the future, the things I saw and felt while sailing Patches are now a part of me, the time on the boat a chapter in my book or a scene in my film.… Continue reading

Episode #5: Finding lots of trash

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #5: Finding lots of trash

“Thank you for cleaning up the ocean”, was a sentence I heard quite a few times when I told people what we’d be going on a sailing trip with the Ocean Cleanup. Every time, I took a few minutes to explain that we were not actually going to clean up the ocean (even though I truly wish it was that easy!). It’s hard to understand that this patch is bigger than many countries – it’s huge, massive, immense. … Continue reading

Episode #4: Look for Eden, find dreams

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #4: Look for Eden, find dreams

So I told you the story about the first 3 days on the Ocean Cleanup Mega Expedition.

Then came magical day 4 and from then on, things started going uphill. Significantly. By not having to concentrate on our bodies and nausea, we started noticing how blue the Pacific Ocean was and how beautifully the sun set and how small we were on this tiny little boat in this world of deep and vast and powerful water.… Continue reading

Episode #3: Why salt water is not our friend

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #3: Why salt water is not our friend

Close your eyes and picture this: it’s hot, it’s summer, you are on vacation. You are at the beach and you’ve been lying there in the sun, bronzing. In your swim wear. When you feel the need to cool off, you jump into the clear blue and amazingly fresh water of the ocean. You dive and you float and it’s fantastic and fresh, there are small little waves, maybe you do some body surfing, you let the water rock you back and forth. Then you get out and dry in the sun, a little while later you take your towel and return to your apartment or house or hotel and you take a shower before you put new clothes on. Sounds good, hey?… Continue reading

THE AMERICAS THE OCEAN CLEAN UP

Episode #2: (Getting to know) The Patches Crew

How can you fully feel and understand my story if you don’t know who I was traveling with?

Well, the first few days I didn’t really know who I was traveling with, either. Living with me on this boat, there were 4 Latin American guys speaking various dialects of Spanish and one north American girl from Denver.  Since we weren’t really exchanging small or big talk day 1 -4, each and one of us coping with the water world separately, it felt like we didn’t personally meet until day 5 and 6.… Continue reading
